The Eagles - Hotel California (Chords, lyrics, Meaning)

Playing this song was like a dream for me when i was a beginner with guitar, though i am still learning, i can play this song pretty well....

Well, i researched a lot for the meaning of this song, and to my surprise, i saw a lot of posts online, but after all the research only one post caught my mind, and got me thinking... The post said that this song is about Drug addiction, and i actually could not believe it at first, but when i read along, that guy had mentioned some lines from the song and he tried to relate them to drug addicts, and thats when i felt that this song is about drug addiction... these are the lines and the relation

"Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way " That's not a candle she's lighting up, its something else.

"Some dance to remember, some dance to forget" Some people do them to remember good memories, some people do them to forget bad one.

'We are all just prisoners here, of our own device" That is basically what drug users are.

"They stab it with their steely knives But they just can't kill the beast" The beast being the addiction.

"You can checkout any time you like, but you can never leave!" You can always say you aren't addicted or that you can quit anytime you want, but you'll always end up going back to them.

Hotel California Chords

Intro : Bm, F#, A, E, G, D, Em, F#

[Bm]On a dark desert highway, [F#]cool wind in my hair
[A]Warm smell of colitas, [E]rising through the air
[G]Up ahead in the distance, [D]I saw a shimering light
[Em]My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim, [F#]I had to stop for the night

[Bm]There she stood in the doorway, [F#]I heard the mission bell
[A]And I was thinking to myself: this could be [E]heaven or this could be hell
[G]Then she lit up a candle [D]and she showed me the way
[Em]There were voices down the corridor; [F#]I thought I heard them say:

"[G]Welcome to the Hotel Califor[D]nia
[F#]Such a lovely place (such a lovely place), such a [Bm]lovely face
[G]Plenty of room at the Hotel Califor[D]nia
Any [Em]time of year (any time of year), you can [F#]find it here"

[Bm]Her mind is Tiffany twisted, [F#]she got the Mercedes Benz
[A]She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys, [E]that she calls friends
[G]How they dance in the courtyard, [D]sweet summer sweat
[Em]Some dance to remember, [F#]some dance to forget

[Bm]So I called up the captain, "[F#]Please bring me my wine", He said
[A]"We haven't had that spirit here since [E]nineteen sixty-nine"
[G]And still those voices are calling from [D]far away
[Em]Wake you up in the middle of the night, [F#]just to hear them say:

"[G]Welcome to the Hotel Califor[D]nia
[F#]Such a lovely place (such a lovely place), such a [Bm]lovely face
They [G]livin' it up at the Hotel Califor[D]nia
What a [Em]nice surprise (what a nice surprise), bring your [F#]alibis"

[Bm]Mirrors on the ceiling, [F#]the pink champagne on ice, and she said
"[A]We are all just prisoners here, [E]of our own device"
[G]And in the master's chambers, [D]they gathered for the feast
[Em]They stab it with their steely knives but they [F#]just can't kill the beast

[Bm]Last thing I remember, I was [F#]running for the door
[A]I had to find the passage back to the [E]place I was before
[G]Relax," said the night man, "We are [D]programmed to receive
[Em]You can check out any time you like, but [F#]you can never leave"

this song by eagles just defines soft rock and paints such a mystifying picture. the rustic touch of this song and the bloody lyrics have just eluded us from the actual meaning of this song... but i suppose the closest it gets to the code i think is the "weed mantra" man... seems a lot more believable and logical than the other hoax.. but i suppose its just left for ur intepretation... so... hotel california is better left unexplored.

Hotel california is definitely one of my all time favourite classics...I have never really taken it to mean anything but now i that i understand maybe just an ounce of the true meaning, it makes it all the more beautiful...I believe this song is much more than just drug addiction...and the deep meaning that lies behind it beautifies it even more...Everytime i listen to it, i get into the heart of the rhythm and it definitely takes me high....One of my favourite lines "Some dance to remember some dance to forget" (the meaning reassures it)....A truly fantastic song....

the song is open to interpretation, anyone that disagrees with that is wrong, it can mean whatever you want it to mean when you listen to it

All songs are to be interpretted by the listener, regardless of thoughts that were put there by the writer, the same as a book it doesnt have pictures because it wants the reader to use their imagination to create the scene
